In from the printers!

New Books!

The second of April sees the release of new products that I have been lucky enough to have been involved with.  I wrote a couple of them and edited another and laid out one more.  Busy, busy!

Above you can see the printed books and materials from these products.  From the left they are ION01 MOTH – Prydia Aflame, UM010 USE ME Support Pack, UM011 USE ME Cyberpunk, UM013 USE ME An Eldritch Horror and underneath them is the insert for the Flintloque boxed set 5109 Sharkes Chosen.  MOTH is a 28mm scale science fiction squad level wargame set of rules which you can learn more about on the MOTH pages of the Alternative Armies site.  It’s a print version of the good selling download edition which demand had us put into print.  The three new USE ME series titles are over on 15mm.co.uk and are released on 2nd April 2012.  Support Pack is a wargamers resource while Cyberpunk and Eldritch Horror are both rules sets for their respective genres.  The 5109 insert goes with the Flintloque boxed set and has stats, rules, scenario and more for the miniatures in the box.  All good!

Of course there is a load more to see and read about all of these over on the websites.  Just thought you might all like to see them laid on me window sill.

The Salute 2012 Demo Game coming soon to Barking Irons Online

There will be a Flintloque 3rd edition special convention demo game at Salute 2012 which will be run by myself and a couple of others who have promised to lend a hand.  We aim for two games, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  These games will be of a convention scenario that I have penned for just this occasion called…’Sharkes Gingerbread’.  Convention scenarios, I have been playing convention games since 1996, are simplified and amplified versions of the rules.  Quick paced and loads of fun.  There are slots for three to five players per game.

Those who follow what I do at ‘AA’ will know that I like to give a lot of free support and stuff for Flintloque, the world’s number one black powder fantasy game, so the scenario and its associated materials will be given out free on the day and online too sooner than that.

So look out for ‘Sharkes Gingerbread’ on Barking Irons Online where you will be able to read all about a magicke valley that has a Gingerbread House, Gingerbread Men, Trolkin with Bange & Oafson and of course everyone favourite Rifleorc’s led by Captain Sharke…it’s gonna be crazy fun!   Oh…and its odd how all the miniatures in the game are the new releases that will be on the trade stand..what a coincidence?!

If you fancy booking a game against me then go along to the Alternative Armies website and follow the guide there.

USE ME Alien Safari – delayed

Artwork of SHM 15mm aliens

Artwork of SHM 15mm aliens by E.Jackson

Those of you who read this blog and also speak to me via email and phone will know that the month running up to the Salute show (which we are now in!) is the second busiest of my year on average.  The biggest wargaming show in the UK occurs in London in April and its an annual bonanza of new releases and special officers at my work.  This year, despite the apparent weak economy, the company is having a mighty busy time with pre-orders and other orders taking advantage of the offers that are available.  This has leant on me rather heavily and as a result a little bit of sad news for you all.

UM012 USE ME Alien Safari is not being released until later this year.  Booooo!  Hissss!

I know, I know.  You are all looking forward to it but I had to make a hard choice.  It is just not ready.  The rules engine needs more playtesting and as its primarily a solo play game the tables covering this need to be bang on for it to work correctly.  Better that it is right than it is rushed.  But I do think it will be by or before the summer for release.

I will post when I have a release date confirmed and also based on a couple of emails I have had please post in comments here if you would like me to do a ‘designers notes’ post or article about the game too.   This might be here or over on Barking Irons Online.

p.s a lovely little look for you in this post at a sheet of artwork that will feature in the game. Enjoy!

I now also see Lead People!

A current project on 'I see lead people'.

I have the good fortune to be able to count the talented fellow Eli Arndt among my friends in the world of miniature wargaming.  Though we have never met we do speak a lot on email and as some of you might know Eli is a miniature designer (among other things) who has worked with 15mm.co.uk under my SHM brand for aspiring designers.  I rate Eli highly and his design work goes from strength to strength.  In fact I am often surprised as how diverse his interests are with aliens, super heroes and board games all coming up in the last week or two alone!

Most recently with myself Eli has another ten 15mm scale miniatures released (SHM26-SHM35) this month.  He is working on more…

I asked Eli if he could give me his blog address so that I could link to him and tell all of you about him.  He was kind enough to send me the link to his blog – I See Lead People.  With the link now on my blog this posting is really just to let you all know to go along and have a look at what Eli is up to.

Enjoy!

Pokey LaFarge…music man!

Middle of Everywhere album cover

Now that is more than a week from my birthday I have had time, not to read the books I got (Salute 2012 and work keeps me slaving!), but to listen to the music I was kindly gifted by friends and family.  Among the various CD’s was one eagerly awaited and wanted by my and that was ‘Middle of Everywhere’ by Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three.  You learn all about Pokey on his website but I have known of him and followed his efforts since New Years Eve 2011 when he appeared on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny just before midnight.  For those not in the UK this programme is easily the best for ringing in ‘the bells’ of a new year as far as TV goes, showing live music for an hour or so by varied acts.  Pokey and his band played a song from their previous album ‘Riverboat Soul’ which had me and my best buddy Jim Brittain hooked right away.  In fact as soon as the shops opened we went and got the album and played it for a week solid!

Sure enough its the second decade of the 21st century but when you listen to Pokey you are transported back to the earlier parts of the previous century with his use of tune, harmony and lyrics emotive of times gone by in the Deep South of America.  In fact his whole persona in public is based around this and many of his publicity stills are in black and white!  He and the band dress in clothes of the period which is quite endearing too.  Damn good music which cuts its own path through the bubblegum and broads mainstream of current tastes.  Check out the YouTube video performance!

I own all of Pokey’s works including his rare 2006 album ‘Marmalade’ (got in a good deal!) but this post is all about the current set and as you see above its what I got on the magic ‘now you is 33’ morning.  So what is ‘Middle of Everywhere’ from and like?

1. So Long Honeybee, Goodbye
2. Ain’t the Same
3. Head to Toe
4. Sunny Side of the Street
5. Shenandoah River
6. Mississippi Girl
7. Feels So Good
8. River Rock Bottom
9. Weedwacker Rag
10. Drinkin’ Whiskey Tonight
11. Good Country Girls
12. Coffee Pot Blues
13. Keep Your Hands Off My Gal

This is Pokey LaFarge’s 4th full-length album. It is a folk / country / bluegrass / dixieland jazz / ragtime / St Louis / Mississippi rooted offering but there is no sense of the band resting on their previous abundant accomplishments. The 3rd album 2010’s ‘Riverboat Soul’, won the 10th Annual Independent Music Award for “Best Americana Album”. This time around though there is slightly more of a New Orleans early jazz feel than before due to the addition of tenor banjo, cornet, trombone and drums to the South City Three’s backing.  Track listing is above.

Though traditional-sounding the songs are in fact all self-penned by Pokey and the recipe is the same as before – i.e. the world inhabited by good-time girls, philandering men and illegal whisky. As usual it is all delivered with customary flair and in the rootsy, bright, brash and raucous upbeat western swing style that we are beginning to recognise as the band’s trademark. The rhythms are impeccable and the feel is reminiscent of Jimmie Rodgers (without the yodelling). Rodgers is often referred to as the father of American country/folk music and did arguably more to bring blues to a wider audience than anyone else in the late’20s and early 30s. He was also a huge influence on the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Mississippi John Hurt. All of which might give you something of a gut-feeling of where Pokey and the guys are coming from.  For me the stand out track is ‘Weedwhacker Rag’…two kinds of people in the world, those who pick up sticks before they mow and those who do not…but Pokey he just stays in the weeds!

I wholeheartedly recommend that whatever your music tastes that you get along to the Pokey website and listen to some tracks for free.  If you like…then go along to Amazon and invest!

5109 Sharkes Chosen – Boxed Set for Flintloque – Released on 2nd April!

It is a grand week indeed over on Alternative Armies for the release of a brand new Flintloque Boxed Set is upon us.  Yes, I taunted you all with teaser posts but it was worth it.  Rob Alderman and myself have been working on this for more than a year and now it’s here – 5109 Sharke’s Chosen (A4 Boxed Set of Characters!)

This is a super set and contains not only the new incarnations of the original six Rifleorcs but also a new Rifleorc (Koopa) plus a new Captain Fredorcson and a new Wo-Gan to replace the long sold out LE code but also a brand new character Major Septic Piecrust.  Not only this but four mounted versions of Sharke, Harpy, Wo-Gan and Piecrust on horses.  All of this in white metal 28mm scale plus a four page insert that gives you full character details and rules, uniform guides, weapon guides, stats for Half-Orcs and a scenario too to get you started.

Miniatures from 5109 set

Above you can see an image of the whole set but if you click HERE you can download a zip file with hi-rez images of all the miniatures both front and back plus a PDF version of the insert that comes with the 5109 boxed set.  Enjoy!

Craig Andrews over on Barking Irons Online has told me he is interested in doing a special interview with myself and Rob Alderman about this great new set and our plans for Sharke and his lads over the next year.  More on this as it happens.

This set will be featured at Salute as the main part of the demo game which I will be running alongside the Gingerbread House.

Also keep in mind you can get 15% off your orders with Alternative Armies until 23rd April 2012 with the Salute Month Promotion using the special code plus if you are going to the show you can collect your order from my very hands saving the postage too!

Enter the Spaceport! New 15mm SHM Miniatures.

15mm.co.uk has just released a bunch of new 15mm into the great SHM Range.  Any and all sculptors can submit to the range but all of these designs were created by Eli Arndt a rather talented fellow and over the last year increasingly a good friend too.  He has a vision of a ‘starport’ in space where all manner of weird creatures meet…I love this idea and these miniatures bring it a step closer to a space opera reality.

Below you can see the miniatures.  I have inserted large format images so you can get a good look at them and below the images is the listing of the codes so you can see what each of these alien chaps is called.

SHM30, SHM31, SHM34

SHM32, SHM33,SHM27

SHM35,SHM28,SHM29

SHM27 Starport Urchins
SHM28 Trandan Mercenary
SHM29 Asteroid Miner
SHM30 Gizbin Mercenary
SHM31 Baroka Crimelord
SHM32 Calamite Preacher
SHM33 Phreek Bystande
SHM34 Prang Soldier
SHM35 Kardul Bodyguard

These miniatures are brilliant and I have added several of them in multiples to my USE ME forces (in fact I used a few of them in testing the Terminus Micro Scenarios too).  Personal favourite is SHM32 Calamite Preacher..great for a psyker or other minor leader of mercenaries.

Remember that you can get 15% off all orders on 15mm.co.uk until April 23rd 2012 in the annual Salute Month Promotion plus you have the option of picking up your order on the day from the Alternative Armies / 15mm.co.uk trade stand saving you the postage too!  Just use the given code.

Eclipsing Binaries Blog – 15mm Sci-fi

This week I got an email from Colin, who runs the Eclipsing Binaries Blog, over on blogger.  Below is an image of one of his favourite miniatures!

Laserburn 505 Mercenary in power armour

He is a big fan of Laserburn and other 15mm.co.uk miniatures and has create a nice little blog…check it out!

Colin has also expressed an interest in designing some miniatures for the SHM range.  I have emailed him with some information and encouragement.  You can check out some of his initial attempts at sculpting on his blog.  He shows a lot of promise.

I hope to hear from Colin soon.

Birthday and Patrick’s Day

Well now I am a year older, perhaps a year wiser, a year in which much has happened.  As always my annual increase in age is on Ireland’s national day and as you can see from the picture I am nothing if not celebratory!

Me Birthday 2012!

Ain't I pretty!

My good lady and the little one’s did me proud as did everyone else and I was showered with gifts.  I spent the day in Ayr spending my loot and having good times including spending a rather inebriated evening with a friend I have not seen in ten years (hope your head does not hurt too much Cameron!).  Some new books, some new clothes and other little tokens of esteem plus the music I wanted by Pokey LaFarge.  Oh, and thanks to all those who have emailed me here wishing me well…I appreciate it.  Lastly Jim Brittain wins the award for the most awfully out of tune rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ for the whole day..suppose I deserve it as I do it to him every year!

How old am I…well you can check my biography page but its been a long time since 1979, so that gives you a big clue.

Now its mothering Sunday and my good lady is sporting her new jacket (a wee gift) along with a clutch of cards and a slap up grill for breakfast too.  Love ya’ baby!

My good lady

Now that is pretty!

But now back to work, some final testing of the Salute 2012 Flintloque scenario, ‘Sharkes Gingerbread’, more on that later…plus some more tinkering with rules mechanics for USE ME Alien Safari.
