Live for a Week on Five Pounds

All the Money I have for Five Days Food

I was quite moved by the newspaper article that I outlined last week here.   So to that end I decided on Sunday that I would try and live on a pound a day for food for one week (that is Monday to Friday).  It will only be me, not my wife and children and it will not include petrol or other payments (otherwise I will not be able to get to work and I will be the ‘bad guy’ for making the kids live on 25p each a day!).  I will post a couple of times to let you all know how its going.

At the moment  I am about to head out to the super market to see if I can spend my remaining day’s budget on some reduced food…waste not want not!

‘Gonna Park whur I want’

The view from my windscreen

Life is hectic just now but more posts are coming soon I promise.  So tonight just a little thing that I witnessed this week through the windscreen of my trusty auto mobile.   I have not been driving for long, only about six months, so I am still fairly new to the great art of parking.  I was sitting in this street in Girvan with my good lady when I saw this and just had to take a picture.   We were discussing my parking in the street mere moments earlier.  I was about six inches further out than I should have been so  I apologised and was about to correct it when…

This car sauntered down the road, crossed over, mounted the kerb, then stopped.  The driver got out leaving it with two wheels on the pavement, wheels turned out into traffic and of course on double yellow lines.

I will leave the social commentary aside apart from saying that it was not a teenage male driver, note the nearness of the entrance to the hall where the driver went and finally…why am I moaning about a measly six inches when classy parking like this is the goal for all good drivers!  🙂

Half a Pound of Purple Sweeties!

A pile of Vimto Creams with one of my 28mm scale Khanate Legion miniatures for scale.

The misery of a runny nose and a boakey throat are beginning to lift…hurrah!  Not quite back to normal but way better than I was earlier this week.  To that end I decided to treat myself and the kids to some ‘sweeties’ or candy for those of you not from the UK.  Luckily for me there is a top quality shop very near to my home in Girvan which specialises in sweets.  So off I went and I found…Vimto Creams!

You can see the jar they come in below.  I asked for two ‘quarters’.  Sweets in Scotland are measured in the old imperial system of pounds and ounces and a quarter is a quarter pound of sweets by weight.  The sweets looked, felt and tasted great.

Ross's Vimto Creams

You can see them and buy them (if you are not in Girvan…very likely) here.  Give them a try.

Cheered me right up!

Excuse my Sniffles

Yes, it don’t rain but it pours!

Taking on the Catalogue project along with several other things has perhaps led to this but no matter.  I am feeling terrible.  My fantastic children have given me the big bad brother all of head colds.  As a result my head feels like it is full of Rubbacrete (Ion Age reference!) and my attention span is shot to hell. Actually it might be a reaction to the madness that was April 2012.  I don’t think I sat down for weeks, certainly I did little but wargame, travel, write and talk.

Anyhoo….I think I shall be better by Monday as in back to one hundred percent so if you are waiting for me to create, contact, phone, speak, post and I do not this is the reason why.  I will email as many of you as possible today who are waiting.

Now where is my hot lemon drink and endless sympathy!

The Science of Decay…fasinating

Rot damn you!

I caught a programme on BBC4 last night and  just had to put up a little post about it.

You can find the programme here on the BBC IPlayer (note sorry, that if you are not the UK this will not work and the programme will only remain online until 10th May 2012) but it is well worth an hour and a half of your time.

Just what does happen in the process of decay and why is it so important to the natural order of the whole world?  Watch and find out.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Audio book on the move

I have a tradition with myself and that is that each time I attend a wargame show (which normally means at least one night away from home) I listen to an audio book to pass the time in the journey.  This time its Salute 2012 and my pick is The Hitchhicker’s Guide to the Universe by Douglas Adams.  This is a very famous book which I will not bother going into here as I am sure most of you have not only heard of it but have read it, see it as a TV or Movie version or listened to it as I am going to already. A fantastic story which I have read several times and it gets better each time as I get older and get more out of it.

While I enjoy every moment of attending a wargame show I do miss my children and my good lady while I am away and the traditional audio book (which has moved from Tape to CD to MP3 and is now on my phone!  Technology eh!) makes the separation pass more quickly.  How soppy of me!

Yes…I will be taking my own towel!

Crows and Ciggy Butts

This morning, as I looked out of my window at 6am, I saw something rather odd that warrants a brief mention.  Most of the birds in Girvan where I live are common gulls, Seagulls the rats of the sky, some other small birds and a colony of Crows which live near the harbour.   What I saw was a Crow sitting across from the window on a nearby roof (no picture sorry, I did not have a camera to hand, the image above is just for illustration) and this Crow had in its mouth three cigarette butts, or the abandoned ends of the smoked cigarettes if you prefer.   It took me a moment to work out what the bird was holding it was so odd.  I then watched as in a matter of seconds it ate all three swiftly and without consideration of what they were or indeed how they must have tasted.

There is no shortage of discarded food in Girvan, much to my annoyance, as people tend to drop whatever they are holding zombie fashion once something else catches their eye.  But rather than any of this left about food the Crow visited the nearby beer garden of the Roxy pub and choose ciggies for breakfast!

What does this mean?  Some sage insight or portent of coming disaster…nah.  Means nothing, just thought I would share this.

It’s great to see an empty shelf!

Run out of Stock button

Sometimes I get a good feeling when I go into work and today was one of those days.  I was told, and then checked for myself, that 15mm.co.uk had just about run out of three USE ME titles.  It was true!

The second print run of my own title UM001 USE ME 15mm Science Fiction is all but gone along with last of the first runs of UM004 USE ME Modern Warfare (by O.G.Joel) and UM006 USE ME Starship Battles (also by O.G.Joel).  I have ordered up a re-print on all three with a bigger run again.  This is the third time for UM001.

I honestly did not see USE ME becoming what it now is.  From one game book, UM001, to now twelve books with another five currently in various stages of development for 2012-13.  They are great little books that fit in your pocket and give a simple but elegant set of rules to suit a certain genre of wargaming.  Makes me proud.  Also the emails I have had passed on to me from gamers all over the world from the UK to the USA, Australia, New Zealand and even North Africa and the Russian Federation along with Hong Kong.  A dozen or more languages and more than that in terms of nations…those little books sure get about!

Maybe its down to the three new titles that have just come out but the number of gamers who come in and order up EVERY title in the range continues apace.  I certainly adore the lads over at Dropship Horizon blog as their readers are big fans of the series.

I do not see the company running out of stock (but if orders are heavy in the next week it is possible) before the new books arrive.  Hence there should not be an ‘Out of Stock’ update on 15mm.co.uk.  I just thought this warranted a post and a good feeling on my part that my ‘little fighter’ continues to grow in popularity.

Salute to the G-House!

I got a package in the mail this morning and was I in for a surprise.  A package from Tony Harwood for use with at the Flintloque demo game at Salute 2012…and in it…the actual original Gingerbread House as yet to feature on Barking Irons Online.  See here for Dampf’s Blog.

The actual Gingerbread House in 28mm scale

This is a superb little piece of terrain, rich and looking real tasty too.  I will of course take good care of it and those of you who come along on the day to Salute will get to it see it and a lot more new Flintloque goodness.

More on the new Flintloque miniatures and sets nearer the time and also on the demo game but for now thanks to Tony and if you are interested in playing in the demo game drop me a line at Alternative Armies.

A Real Bad Can of Spam

I have been blogging for a month or so now and its going well.  Certainly all the kind comments and emails and words sent my way have given me that impression.  I have now even started to get comments on my postings here on the blog…excellent!  But.  The amount of spam comments is something of a joke!

Some are funny, some are rude, some are downright foul in their language and tone.  The way this blog is set up no comment appears without me authorising it and thereby the address it came from so there is little chance of spam actually making onto a virtual page but none the less it is quite a slog deleting it.

I may look into plugins and such as this blog grows to prevent spamming, all suggestions welcome, but for now I thought I would share my thoughts on this.
