Pick and Choose – Just what does a Miniature Company take to a Gaming Convention?

What way to go and what to take...

So it is convention time, or show time if in the UK and the boss says to you ‘Right which of all of our mighty ranges and books are we taking this time?‘.  Now this conversation happened weeks ago for Salute 2012 but it is the same each time and for every event.  Unless you load up five large vans, get three twenty four foot stands, turn over a ton (no not joking) of white metal alloy into miniatures you simply cannot take everything with you.  So you must choose what to take and know that whatever you choose you will be the saviour of some and the cause of damnation for others.

A lot of wargamers seem to think that asking at a trade stand for a single miniature from a pack that you once carried in 1994 for a range out of production and you not having it to hand is tantamount to treason.  Well, I try and keep everyone happy but it is just not possible.  Not everything there has ever been can be to hand.  That is the reason for ‘collect on the day’ orders to avoid dissapointment.  That is before you get to the fact that we have both Alternative Armies (Flintloque, Slaughterloo, MOTH, Firefight 2.0, Erin, Typhon, DarkeStorme) and also 15mm.co.uk (HOT,HOF,SHM,ASQL2.0,HOF Fire-Team, USE ME, Isarus, Medus, Altuos, 6mm sci-fi etc).  So choices must be made…but what?

I am sure that every miniature wargame company has to make these choices and not everyone does it by throwing a D6 dice and chancing to fate (I did that only once!).  So how do you choose?  What are the parameters?  Due you take the new, the old, the best seller, the remainder stock, the traded in, the stuff at the back of the warehouse, those items you inported that are too heavy to send in the mail, stock that came back from stores and is already packed and priced..the list goes on.   While I cannot tell you how others make their choices I can tell you my own system which I feel is close to how others do it.

15mm fantasy and science fiction wargamers seem to like having an entire range to choose from as they tend to buy an entire ‘army’ in one go while at a show.  This means I ensure the whole HOF and HOT ranges are there with their rule systems.  Then I watch with amazement as whole stacks of packs are lifted off the racks by one customer!  On the other hand 28mm Fantasy, Science Fiction and Flintloque players seem more to like the idea of the new and the small force.  That is they pick a few packs or even just one as a painting project; often adding to an existing force.  It is not odd for a new limited code (this season it is VLE12 Villiam Bedsforc the Bombardier) to run through so much of its number to have it out of stock by the end of the year.  Those interested in rule books and there are many tend to pick a system and then purchase every title in it.  The best example of this I can give you is the USE ME series of titles with wargamers buying a half dozen booklet at a time covering sci-fi, fantasy, WW2, ACW and more.

I always take every code we have released in the last year, since the last Salute, that way those customers we tend to see only once a year have something new to see and to purchase.  I avoid taking anything left laying about in the warehouse as it is often there because it does not sell well and space as I have said is at a premium.  The same goes for stock from retail stores.  This is often in need of re-packing, re-pricing and can be codes that did not sell through too.

As for traded in I run a unique service at Alternative Armies called ‘The Swop Drawer’ where we will accept at retail value limited codes from the Flintloque range (LE’s, VLE’s and LEU’s) in exchange for other codes from the range limited or not.  The gamer pays the freight to us, we pay it back to him. The codes swopped must be sold out though not ones that are still in stock.  This is a slow process but twice a year, once at Salute and once in the run up to Christmas I put out a list or a rack and its first come, first served for the sold out packs again at face value.  This will be the fourth year of the swop drawer at Salute.

After this the space that is left is given over to two main areas, for all the pins on all the racks are now full, the areas of painted miniatures and new range titles.  Alternative Armies employees a team of painters and supplies thousands of high quality pro-painted miniatures (from our ranges, all by hand, all in Scotland) covering all of our game systems.  These are sold as singles and units and are out to see, to be examined and handled too.  Customers love to see what they buy.  The new range titles, well I have to pick three, and this year it is HOF Fire-Team (released at Salute first!), Flintloque the Skirmish (the game we are known for all over the world) and USE ME which has gone from six to twelve titles in just over a year and has made me very proud.

So that is what I take, what I chose this time.  The choices are rational and cover as many bases as it is possible to but they will not please all.  They do not please me but only because I ‘know’ that I will be asked at least one hundred times across the day for something we did not bring.  But space is limited and the demands for it come by the dozen.  We take the new, the limited, the traded in, all our books and rule systems, two entire 15mm ranges, a spattering of the massive Ion Age and Flintloque ranges plus a focus on painted miniatures and three of the array of titles we publish.  I pick and choose and I smile!

See you all in London…

The Salute 2012 Demo Game coming soon to Barking Irons Online

There will be a Flintloque 3rd edition special convention demo game at Salute 2012 which will be run by myself and a couple of others who have promised to lend a hand.  We aim for two games, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  These games will be of a convention scenario that I have penned for just this occasion called…’Sharkes Gingerbread’.  Convention scenarios, I have been playing convention games since 1996, are simplified and amplified versions of the rules.  Quick paced and loads of fun.  There are slots for three to five players per game.

Those who follow what I do at ‘AA’ will know that I like to give a lot of free support and stuff for Flintloque, the world’s number one black powder fantasy game, so the scenario and its associated materials will be given out free on the day and online too sooner than that.

So look out for ‘Sharkes Gingerbread’ on Barking Irons Online where you will be able to read all about a magicke valley that has a Gingerbread House, Gingerbread Men, Trolkin with Bange & Oafson and of course everyone favourite Rifleorc’s led by Captain Sharke…it’s gonna be crazy fun!   Oh…and its odd how all the miniatures in the game are the new releases that will be on the trade stand..what a coincidence?!

If you fancy booking a game against me then go along to the Alternative Armies website and follow the guide there.

USE ME Alien Safari – delayed

Artwork of SHM 15mm aliens

Artwork of SHM 15mm aliens by E.Jackson

Those of you who read this blog and also speak to me via email and phone will know that the month running up to the Salute show (which we are now in!) is the second busiest of my year on average.  The biggest wargaming show in the UK occurs in London in April and its an annual bonanza of new releases and special officers at my work.  This year, despite the apparent weak economy, the company is having a mighty busy time with pre-orders and other orders taking advantage of the offers that are available.  This has leant on me rather heavily and as a result a little bit of sad news for you all.

UM012 USE ME Alien Safari is not being released until later this year.  Booooo!  Hissss!

I know, I know.  You are all looking forward to it but I had to make a hard choice.  It is just not ready.  The rules engine needs more playtesting and as its primarily a solo play game the tables covering this need to be bang on for it to work correctly.  Better that it is right than it is rushed.  But I do think it will be by or before the summer for release.

I will post when I have a release date confirmed and also based on a couple of emails I have had please post in comments here if you would like me to do a ‘designers notes’ post or article about the game too.   This might be here or over on Barking Irons Online.

p.s a lovely little look for you in this post at a sheet of artwork that will feature in the game. Enjoy!

Looking at the Naval for USE ME?

Over on the Notables Yahoo Group the esteemed members have been discussing another avenue for the superb USE ME Series to possibly head down.  This time it is the idea of ship to ship actions, historical or fantasy, naval warfare in all its glory.

Off the bat I would say that it could certainly be done.  The USE ME ‘engine’ is very adaptable and I have a fairly good knowledge of 18th century age of sail warfare.  A set of rules written for the age of sail could be cribbed and altered for fantasy and also for the ancient (muscle rather than wind powered) world.  The Elan rating system would transfer to vessels or their crews and keeping the game simple and fun, a core aim, could be done.

Notable group members listed several factors that they would love to see in a set of rules and among them were:

  • The distances involved on tabletop would increase as the technology increased (galleys, galleons, men of war, dreadnoughts, carriers etc).  This affects Elan and human reactions.
  • There is no way to do a standard length booklet set of rules that covers all periods.  Too much variance.
  • A variable wind system that really influences play for sailing ships.
  • Fatigue for muscle powered ships.
  • The Crew of a ship are vital and all depends on them.
  • Solo Play Option.
  • Points system or creation system to develop ships, skills, crews, options.

Craig Andrews of Barking Irons editorial fame suggests a possible Black Powder Fantasy version for Valon setting of Flintloque.  There is most certainly room for this!

But what would always be kept in mind is Kurt Benson’s comment on the discussion thread

“upon reflection I am not sure you could do justice to tiremes as Elan would be everything to combat, from ww2 on becomes dominated by carriers and that would be a mess in a simple set of rules.  world war one is the simplest to do as you don’t have to mess with wind and sail.  glad its not my job to figure out.  I tried to figure out how to do a realistic set of rules for sail for flintloque as I am a huge Hornblower fan and failed miserably. ”

I guess that is why they pay me the big bucks!  🙂

Work on UM010 USE ME Support Pack complete

UM010 cover

I have completed the digital works and final proofs on the UM010 USE ME Support Pack title written by Kurt Benson (author of USE ME Wild West).  Release is scheduled for April 2012.

This title takes the USE ME Series in a new direction.  In addition to rules sets the series will also feature expansion titles and others.  UM010 is the first of these.

This little booklet has a lot packed into it, more than other books much more expensive and larger than it is in fact.  Sections on Strategy, on Tactics, on Terrain Building, on Laying out Gaming Tables, Special Environments, Weather Systems and even how to take on a city campaign from several angles and boards.  Kurt has really outdone himself and his many years experience as a wargamer shine through on the pages.  Awesome!

Support Pack is very much a USE ME title and fits in expertly with many of the rule sets in the series.  Mainly aimed at UM001 USE ME 15mm Science Fiction, UM003 USE ME World War Two and UM004 USE ME Modern Warfare it also has a lot to offer for UM005 USE ME American Civil War and UM007 USE ME Post Apocalypse too.
